Coffee A to Z

Kaffe A till Ö

“Coffee is coffee” is what some people think, but not us at Coffydoor. We know that taste is everything, but we also think that you know best how you want to enjoy your coffee. That's why we're not going to complicate it with a lot of must-haves and boring pointers, but we can at least give you our best tips on how to make your perfect cup of coffee even better.

Here we go over all the terms in the “coffee” category, once and for all. Whether you’re a die-hard enthusiast or completely new to the enchanting world of coffee, we hope you’ll learn something new, or maybe even find a new favorite?

What is an Americano - and how do you make it?

An espresso topped with hot water, in short. The Americano originated during World War II when American soldiers in Italy and France began diluting their espresso with hot water to make it mimic the coffee they had at home. The soldiers brought the recipe back to the US and the rest is history. For an Americano we recommend Ristretto or Espresso - Order a sample pack here .

What is a Café au Lait - and how do you make it?

“Coffee with milk” in French. Despite the clear translation, it is difficult to say exactly what you will be served as it varies depending on where you are. The most common, however, is that you will receive a cup with equal parts strong coffee and hot milk. In Sweden, it is usually synonymous with a decent brewed coffee served with a splash of hot milk. No weirdness!

Although the similarities are striking, café au lait is not to be confused with its Italian cousin, the Cappuccino. The difference is that a Café au Lait consists of steamed milk and not foamed like in a Cappuccino. All of our capsules work for a Cappuccino - Order test package here .

What is a Caffé Latte - and how do you make it?

Sometimes it's the little details that make the big difference, so to speak. Unlike a café au lait or cappuccino, a caffé latte is made up of more than half milk, ¾ to be exact. For many, caffé latte is the gateway to learning how to drink coffee because of the large amount of milk. You can top the drink with frothed milk, but only a small splash if you're feeling fancy. For the ultimate experience, we suggest serving your caffé latte in a glass instead of the classic coffee cup. For a Caffe Latte, you can use all of our capsules - Order test package here .

What is a Cappuccino - and how do you make it?

A true classic that consists of equal parts espresso, milk foam and hot milk. The perfect cappuccino has a foam that is dense, creamy and glossy. Doesn't that sound delicious? According to Italian tradition, Cappuccino is a breakfast drink that may not be served after 11 am. Of course the idea is nice, but with coffee capsules from Coffydoor you can have a steaming fresh Cappuccino at any time of the day and night. Our espresso capsules give your Cappuccino a truly creamy and luxurious feel. And you - with our coffee subscription you also avoid the stress of running out of coffee if you get the urge for another cup! For a Cappuccino we recommend Espresso and Lungo - Order test package here .

What is a Cortado - and how do you make it?

On to Spain and cortado. The name comes from the verb cortar which means “to cut” in Spanish. We think it’s a pretty fitting name - cortado is a “cut” espresso, i.e. an espresso with milk. The result is something of a mix between a Caffé Macchiato and a Cappuccino. Cortado is also a common drink in both Portugal and Cuba. Similar drinks are found in both France and Italy, as noisette and espressino respectively. We recommend Espresso and Lungo for a Cortado - Order test package here .

What is an Espresso - and how do you make it?

Espresso – a strong taste experience in a small package topped with a golden crema. The intense taste comes from hot water being forced under high pressure through finely ground coffee. The result is a steaming fresh cup of really strong, concentrated coffee. The drink is widely known by its Italian name, but at home it is simply called caffé, as Espresso is the dominant coffee drink in Italy. In many ways, Espresso is considered the core of today's coffee culture, as it forms the basis of almost all coffee drinks such as Cappuccino, Americano and Macchiato. We can't help but agree. Espresso can be served as a single or double. As a rule, between 7-10 grams of finely ground coffee are used for a single espresso, and a double espresso is exactly what it sounds like – two espressos together.

Do you want to take your Espresso to the next level? With us you will find a well-balanced and creamy espresso that is roasted on a perfect blend of Brazilian Arabica beans and Ethiopian Robusta beans. Enjoy an espresso that is powerful and round in taste, developed to avoid the very bitter notes that are typical of a traditional espresso. We think you will love our espresso just as much as we do. Buon appetito! For an Espresso we of course recommend our Espresso capsule - Order a test package here .

What is a Flat White - and how do you make it?

Flat White is an Australian, slightly weaker version of cortado. An espresso with milk foam, simply put. To many, the two coffee drinks may seem practically identical, but to a true connoisseur the difference is clear – the foam on a flat white has a warmer and thicker milk foam than a cortado, giving the drink a different texture and consistency. For a Flat White we recommend Lungo - Order test package here .

What is a Lungo - and how do you make it?

The basic recipe for a lungo is the same as for a simple espresso, with the difference that a lungo consists of almost double the amount. Lungo is thus a slightly diluted espresso where the water has been allowed to run for a longer time. The result is a coffee drink with a character and strength that is more reminiscent of our Swedish brewed coffee or caffé americano.

To find the perfect balance between the best of Italian coffee tradition and our honest brewed coffee, we have developed a Lungo full of character, flavor and strength adapted to Swedish tastes. Our Lungo is a medium roast that is made mainly from coffee beans from the Brazilian Arabica bean, which gives an intense flavor with hints of dark chocolate topped with a sweet aftertaste of a slightly sweeter character. The well-balanced flavor makes our Lungo the perfect cup of coffee for all occasions and times of the day. Our answer to the perfect cup of coffee, simply put. For a Lungo, we of course recommend Lungo, but Ristretto is also a popular choice with milk - Order test package here .

What is a Macchiato - and how do you make it?

Like a Flat White or Cortado, a Caffé Macchiato is mostly espresso topped with just a tiny splash of frothed milk. The name is Italian for “spotted” or “marked” and refers to the fact that the espresso is speckled by the small amount of milk added. The Macchiato is thus the most intense of the coffee drinks with milk.

Have you heard of Latte Macchiato? A much milder version that was originally served to children in Italy as an alternative to hot chocolate or a glass of milk. Latte Macchiato is made with half steamed milk and half foamed milk, topped with an espresso. For a Macchiato we recommend Espresso and Ristretto - Order a sample pack here

What is a Ristretto - and how do you make it?

Ristretto is Italian for “limited” and is a coffee drink that is very similar to an espresso. The difference is that the brewing is stopped before the espresso is finished brewing and consists of only half the amount of water, which creates a more intense taste experience – the exact opposite of the slightly milder lungo. The result is a small and strong coffee that is often drunk in one gulp – perfect in the morning or as an extra boost during the day!

Our ristretto is brewed with high-quality Robusta beans from Ethiopia, which gives it a full and intense flavor. With a roasted and round character, ristretto is good to enjoy in its simplicity but is just as good with espresso as with a splash of milk for latte or cappuccino. Can it be a cup? For a Ristretto, we of course recommend Ristretto - Order test package here .
